Identification required to scrap your metal

Due to an increase in the commodity price of metal, metal theft has become a significant issue and as a result, the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 has been implemented. To comply with this legislation, Mellor Metals require suitable identification from all scrap metal suppliers in the form of the following:
1. Either a photocard driving licence (including address) or
2. A current passport and supporting document consisting of one of the following:
  • A utility bill (not mobile phone bill)
  • Bank or building society statement
  • Debit or credit card statement
  • Council tax letter
*Please note we cannot accept collectors/site licences as proof of ID

All grades of scrap metal must exclude:

  • All scrap metal must be free from dirt, excessive oil, grease, rust or corrosion
  • Explosives, shells, bombs and any other dangerous inflammable material
  • All scrap metal must be free of alloys although certain proportions may be permitted by joint agreement
  • Hazardous radioactive material
  • Deliveries must comply with Health, Safety and Environmental requirements
  • Pressurised gas, fuel or sealed containers
